International Condemnation Grows Over Israeli West Bank Settlement Measures
The international community is expressing growing outrage over Israel's plans to tighten its control over the occupied West Bank, with the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressing grave concern. The condemnation comes as Saudi Arabia and seven other Muslim-majority countries have already spoken out against the new Israeli measures, which would facilitate further settlement construction in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The Israeli security cabinet has approved plans that would allow Jewish Israelis to directly purchase West Bank land and extend Israeli control over areas currently governed by the Palestinian Authority. While the exact implementation date is uncertain, the rules do not require further approval.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric warned that these changes are "eroding the prospects for the two-state solution." The West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, is a crucial component of any future Palestinian state, but it is also seen by some religious right-wing groups as Israeli territory.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated that the changes aim to "deepen our roots in all regions of the Land of Israel and bury the idea of a Palestinian state." Guterres described Israel's actions as "destabilizing" and cited the International Court of Justice's ruling that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal.
The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the UAE, Qatar, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey strongly condemned the illegal Israeli decisions and measures aimed at imposing unlawful Israeli sovereignty. They described these actions as an attempt to "entrench settlement activity and enforce a new legal and administrative reality in the occupied West Bank, thereby accelerating attempts at its illegal annexation and the displacement of the Palestinian people."
The Israeli measures also include plans to transfer authority over building permits for settlements in Hebron, the largest Palestinian city in the West Bank, from the Palestinian Authority to Israel. This reform further strengthens Israeli control over two significant religious sites in the southern West Bank: Rachel's Tomb near Bethlehem and the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron.
The Palestinian presidency in Ramallah views this move as an attempt to "deepen attempts to annex the occupied West Bank." Palestinian political scientist and former minister Ali Jarbawi warns that this could lead to Palestinians being confined to small pieces of land, primarily their major cities and enclaves, with the rest of the land potentially lost.
Yonatan Mizrachi of Peace Now, an Israeli anti-settlement watchdog, believes these steps will further weaken the Palestinian Authority, established under the Oslo Accords in the 1990s as an interim governing body pending the creation of a fully fledged Palestinian state. Mizrachi highlights that Israel's actions have been pushing towards annexation for three years, and this move is a significant step in that direction.
The announcement comes just days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the United States, where he is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump. The international community's response to these measures remains to be seen, with Washington yet to provide a formal comment.
It is important to note that over 500,000 Israelis live in settlements and outposts in the West Bank, which are considered illegal under international law. Approximately 3 million Palestinians reside in the territory, and another 200,000 Israelis live in Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem, which the UN considers part of the Palestinian territories.
